Kalispell sister
celebrates 60 years as Sister of Mercy
On Sunday, June
10, five Sisters of Mercy including Sister
Betty Carr of Kalispell celebrated their anniversary of vows to religious
life.
Celebrating 60 years as Sisters of Mercy are Sister Betty Carr and Sister Mary
Maurice Schulte. Sister Carr, originally from Cascade, Iowa, was received as
a Sister of Mercy in 1947. Formerly known as Sister Mary Denis, she spent most
of her ministry teaching in schools in three states: St. Matthew School in Kalispell,
Mont.; Our Lady of Grace School in Edina, Minn.; and in the Iowa schools of
St. John and Sacred Heart in Waterloo; St. Joseph in DeWitt; Sacred Heart in
Oelwein; St. Nicholas in Evansdale; St. Joseph in Marion and St. Patrick in
Anamosa.
Sister Carr spent her last 10 years in ministry visiting the homebound in Kalispell.
She is currently retired.
Sister Mary Maurice (Marie Gertrude) Schulte grew up in Granger, Iowa, before
entering the Sisters of Mercy 60 years ago. She traveled to three states with
her teaching ministry at St. Matthew in Kalispell; Our Lady of Grace in Edina,
Minn.; and in the Iowa schools of St. Patrick in Fairfax and Garryowen; Immaculate
Conception in Elma; St. John in Waterloo; Sacred Heart in Oelwein; and All Saints
and Immaculate Conception in Cedar Rapids. Sister Schulte retired in 1987 and
currently resides at Mercy Hallmar Care Center in Cedar Rapids.
