Team chosen
for Legendary Lodge
A team of 17 people
has been selected for the summer season at Legendary Lodge, the Diocese of Helenas
camp on Salmon Lake. They will work at eight camps with more than 600 kids over
the season.
Colleen Dunne, camp director, is beginning her eighth summer at the Lodge. During
the school year, she works at Carroll College as a campus minister.
Assistant camp director is Rick Hyland, principal at St. Joseph School in Missoula.
His wife, Laura, is at Legendary Lodge for her fifth season, three as a counselor
and two as administrative assistant. She teaches at Frenchtown Elementary School.
Counselors include Eric Connolly, a junior majoring in photo-journalism at the
University of Montana in Missoula; Travis Grotbo of Helena, a student at Carroll
college, and Mandie Secord, a Great Falls native who goes to school in Missoula.
Kevin Jam, born in Billings and raised in Red Lodge, now lives in Helena. After
this summer, Kayla Murray, also a Helena resident, will complete her student
teaching; she hopes to do it partly in New Zealand.
Cheline Perry grew up on a small farm near Dillon. She is a psychology major
at Carroll College, and would like to some day use animals as therapy for people
who have a disability. Justin Goss, born and raised in Missoula, graduated from
Loyola Sacred Heart High School, and has started attending Montana State University,
where he hopes to graduate with a degree in film.
Brian Bergeron is a recent Carroll College graduate from Ketchikan, Alaska.
This is his first summer as a counselor at Legendary Lodge after having served
as a volunteer last summer. Kelly Ruby hails from Kalispell. She is planning
to transfer from the University of Montana in Missoula to Carroll College next
fall.
Sarah McLaughlin, born and raised in Helena, will return to Legendary for her
second year as a full-time counselor. She attends Carroll College and plans
to graduate with a degree in nursing next spring.
Tyler Grutsch has lived in Missoula his entire life, and is a student at the
University of Montana. He has gone to Legendary Lodge as either a camper or
a counselor for the last nine years. Frankie Barnhill, a Missoulian through
and through, is a junior at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minn.,
where she is studying English, theology and journalism, but also attending as
many concerts and Twins games as possible.
Alex Woelkers, originally from Great Falls, is a senior theology and philosophy
major at Carroll College and may graduate next spring. He is excited to grow
in his faith along with the awesome team and campers.
Jessica Sargent, from Grand Junction, Colo., will spend her second summer at
Legendary Lodge. She will be on Carroll Colleges pioneer cross country
team next fall.
Bishop George Thomas met with the team on June 4 for lunch and conversation.
During his visit, the team put on a skit in honor of his third anniversary as
Bishop of the Diocese of Helena.
