Sr. Madelon Burns, SCL
Sister Madelon Burns, a Butte native and Sister of Charity of Leavenworth, died May 27, 2004, in Kansas City, Kan.

Madelon Therese Burns was born Dec. 16, 1920, to Clarence J. and Amanda Caron Burns.

She graduated from Immaculate Conception grade school and Girls’ Central high school.

She entered the SCL community in 1939 and as Sister Mary Clarence professed vows in 1941. She chose to be known by her baptismal name in 1974.

Sister Burns was dean of students at St. Mary College (now University of St. Mary) and mistress of novices in Leavenworth. She served as director of counseling and guidance at Butte Central High School, 1974-1987, and as employee assistance counselor, 1987-1995, at St. Vincent Healthcare, Billings.

She received a bachelor’s degree from St. Mary College and a master’s degree from Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

Survivors include her brothers, Father Ernest Burns and Raymond (Renee) Burns, sister-in-law Phyllis Burns, all of Butte, and nieces and nephews.

Mass of Resurrection was celebrated June 1 in Ross Chapel with interment in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the motherhouse grounds. A Memorial Mass was held June 9 at St. Ann Parish in Butte.
