Augustine of Hippo: Confessions (V 1588)
Written in 390, Confessions is one of the central texts of the Christian theological tradition. Augustine discovered that human restlessness and searching, which he had experienced as a painful affliction, are indeed gifts, which God has imprinted into the human spirit. This insight remains one of the most important recognitions in the spiritual life.
Friedrich Von Hugel: The Mystical Element of Religion (V 1589)
One of the great spiritual directors of the 20th century, Von Hugel produced a magnificent synthesis of the elements needed for spirituality to be rooted in reality, intellectual satisfaction and fulfilling action. It remains a major contribution to an authentically Catholic spirituality in the modern world.
Theresa of Avila: Autobiography (V 1590)
Theresa of Avila (1515-82), a Doctor of the Church, experienced opposition in her day by religious leaders who disparaged her visions. Theresa, however, trusted her inner experiences and wrote about them in her autobiography. Father Michael Himes looks at her practical spiritual wisdom and presents to us a woman of integrity in a tumultuous era.
Julian of Norwich: Shewings of Divine Love (V 1591)
In 1373, Dame Julian experienced 16 “shewings” or revelations of the depth and intensity of God’s love for her and all creatures. Her account of those revelations and her subsequent meditations on them is one of the treasures of medieval spirituality and a landmark of the English spiritual tradition.
