Parents who engage in the faith formation of their children strengthen themselves as well as their sons and daughters, a national leader in Catholic youth ministry said at a Helena workshop. Robert J. McCarty led the “Strong Catholic Families: Strong Catholic Youth” workshop Oct. 8 at the Cathedral of St. Helena’s Brondel Center.

“Playing for the long haul, we are seeing parents who are more engaged in the lives of their kids,” said McCarty, who is executive director of the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, based in Washington, D.C., and holds a doctor of ministry degree. “I think it certainly benefits the young people themselves when their families are engaged in their faith formation.”

Additionally, that engagement encourages and enables parents “to think more clearly about their own faith, why it’s important and how they can share it with their own kids,” he said.

The Diocese of Helena’s Catholic Formation Services welcomed McCarty to the workshop, which drew nearly 50 participants from around the diocese. They represented each deanery. Some were in Helena the previous night, for the diocesan Son Light Celebration of Youth and Young Adult Ministry.
