Participation in the annual Women’s Advent Retreat at Holy Family Parish in Anaconda has rocketed since the retreat’s inception in 2009. The 2011 retreat on Dec. 10 drew 58 participants, an increase of 22 people since the first retreat two years earlier. Open to women of all faiths, the retreat last month drew participants from both Anaconda and the surrounding area. Facilitator Dana Ciallella of Anaconda said the guidance of the Holy Spirit influenced the rise in numbers. She also said that “there’s a real hunger among people, for togetherness,” and that women who participate in the retreat find some of that need met. The day included a talk, meditations and time for sharing. Titled “Kissing the Face of God,” the retreat offered sessions emphasizing the unbreakable bond between mother and child. Father Tim Moriarty provided a welcome and spoke about the Christmas season. Scripture readings by Barbara Killoy of Anaconda preceded the first meditation, titled “Visitation of Mary” and led by Patrice Downey of Deer Lodge. The second meditation, given by Dana Ciallella, was titled “Mary’s Prayer.”
After each meditation, retreat participants broke into small groups for discussion and reflection. Christmas carols sung to music by Dee Dee Dunn of Butte followed the taking of a group photo, lunch was served and Nancy Zigrang of Butte then gave the third meditation, titled “Faith Family and Friends.” In closing the retreat, participants formed a circle, joined hands and sang “God Bless Us Everyone,” a song popularized by Celine Dion. Three men—Al Ciallella, Jim Killoy and Jim Bellandi—helped with the lunch and kitchen duties so that women could focus on the retreat. Organizers said they are thankful for support and guidance that Father Moriarty has provided for the retreat each year.
