Parish Realignments

Following the recommendation of the Diocesan Personnel Board and the recommendation of the Presbyteral Council, and in keeping with the Living Stones planning document, Bishop George Leo Thomas is making the following changes in parish configuration effective July 1.

Butte Catholic Community North is being reconfigured to include St. Patrick Parish and Immaculate Conception Parish.

Butte Catholic Community Central will include St. Joseph Parish and St. John the Evangelist Parish, with an administrator in residence at St. John Rectory, for one year ad experimentum.

Our lady of the lake Mission, Canyon Ferry, will transfer from the care by the pastor of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Parish in East Helena to care by the pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Townsend.

To provide appropriate pastoral care of the people of God residing in the area, Valley of Flowers Mission in Belgrade is being established as a parish, with the name St. John Vianney. Holy Family Parish in Three Forks remains a parish. One priest will be the pastor for both.


Pastoral Assignments

Following consultation, Bishop George Leo Thomas announces the following pastoral appointments. All are effective July 1, unless otherwise indicated.

Father Patrick Beretta – Administrator, Butte Catholic Community North (St. Patrick and Immaculate Conception parishes) for a three-year term. Father Beretta also will be coordinator of the chaplaincy serving Butte Central Schools, will serve as the chaplain for students at Montana Tech of the University of Montana and will assist with chaplain responsibilities at St. James Healthcare in Butte (previously parochial vicar for St. John the Evangelist Parish in Butte).

Deacon Brian Bergeron Deacon Brian Bergeron – Diaconal ministry at the Cathedral of St. Helena, effective June 15.

Father Vitus Borogo Father Vitus Borogo, a priest of the Archdiocese of Kaduna in Nigeria – Parochial vicar for St. William Parish in Shelby with St. Thomas in Sunburst, St. Margaret Parish in Cut Bank and St. Francis Parish in Valier with Holy Cross Mission in Dupuyer, for a three-year term. Father Borogo also will pursue a master’s degree at the University of Great Falls.

Father John Olin Brown Father John Olin Brown – Priest-hermit at Sycamore Tree Contemplative Center in the Swan Valley and will provide priestly ministry at Our Lady of the Swan Valley Mission, for another term of one year.

Father Joseph Carver, SJ – Concluding his assignment as parochial vicar of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Missoula and as the superior for Jesuit priests assigned in Montana, to undertake a new appointment with the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus, effective June 1.

Deacon John Crutchfield Deacon John Crutchfield – Following his ordination as transitional deacon scheduled on June 21, he will be assigned as deacon at St. Matthew Parish in Kalispell until the end of August, at which time he will return to Mount Angel Seminary to complete his studies.

Father Jeffrey Fleming Father Jeffrey Fleming – Pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Frenchtown, with St. Albert the Great Mission in Alberton and St. Mary Queen of Heaven Mission in Superior, for a sixyear term. This is an addition to Father Fleming’s responsibilities as pastor of Christ the King Parish in Missoula.

Father Joseph Fleming Father Joseph Fleming – After his ordination as a priest on June 21, he will be assigned as parochial vicar for Christ the King Parish in Missoula, and as parochial vicar for St. John the Baptist Parish in Frenchtown, with St. Albert the Great Mission in Alberton and St. Mary Queen of Heaven Mission in Superior, for a three-year term.

Father Eric Gilbaugh Father Eric Gilbaugh – Pastor of the newly established St. John Vianney Parish in Belgrade and pastor of the realigned Holy Family Parish in Three Forks, for six-year terms.

Father Robert Hall Father Robert Hall – Administrator, St. John the Evangelist Parish in Butte and administrator, St. Joseph Parish in Butte, the parishes of the Butte Catholic Community Central, for a oneyear term. Father Hall was the pastor for Butte Catholic Community North before taking a sabbatical from April-June 2013.

Father Edward Hislop Father Edward Hislop – Pastor of Blessed Trinity Parish in Missoula with Spirit of Christ Mission in Lolo, for another six year term.

Father Pascal Kasanziki Father Pascal Kasanziki, a member of the Xaverian Fathers seeking incardination in the Diocese of Helena – Parochial vicar, Cathedral of St. Helena. Previously parochial vicar for Butte Catholic Community North.

Father Edward Kohler Father Edward Kohler – Pastor of St. Anne Parish in Heart Butte, with Holy Family Mission, effective June 1. This is in addition to Father Kohler’s assignment as pastor of Little Flower Parish, Browning, with its missions.

Father Matthew Kunkel, SJ Father Matthew Kunkel, SJ – Following his ordination as a priest on June 8, assignment as parochial vicar for St. Francis Xavier Parish in Missoula, effective June 15.

Father Marc Lenneman Father Marc Lenneman – Chaplain, Carroll College, for another threeyear term. Father Lenneman continues his assignments as diocesan vocation director and as coordinator of priestly ministry at Legendary Lodge.

Father Tom O’Donnell Father Tom O’Donnell – Concluding assignment as pastor of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Parish in East Helena, with its missions, and accepts full senior status. Father O’Donnell retains his position as canonical pastor of Holy Cross Parish in Townsend.

Father Robert Porter Father Robert Porter – Continuing as pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Deer Lodge, with responsibility for ministry at Montana State Prison.

Father Daniel J. Powers, SJ Father Daniel J. Powers, SJ – Concluding assignment as pastor of St. Anne Parish in Heart Butte, with Holy Family Mission, and accepting senior status with the Society of Jesus, effective June 1. Father Powers will reside in Spokane, Wash.

Father Leo Proxell Father Leo Proxell – Pastor of Holy Rosary Parish in Bozeman for another six-year term, and canonical pastor for Our Lady of the Pines Parish in West Yellowstone, with St. Joseph Mission in Big Sky.

Father Sean Raftis Father Sean Raftis – Administrator, Holy Cross Parish in Townsend, with Our Lady of the Lake Mission at Canyon Ferry. Father Raftis is concluding his assignment as parochial vicar for Ss. Cyril and Methodius Parish in East Helena, with its missions.

Father John Robertson Father John Robertson – Administrator, St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Helmville with St. Jude Mission in Lincoln, in addition to his responsibilities at the Chancery.

Father David Severson Father David Severson – Active duty as chaplain with the Montana National Guard, service that took effect March 21. Previously, Father Severson was parochial vicar at the Cathedral of St. Helena, with St. Theodore Mission in Avon.

Father Daniel Shea Father Daniel Shea – Professor emeritus at Carroll College, and continuing his term as pastor of Our Lady of the Valley Parish in Helena.

Father Miroslaw Szynal Father Miroslaw Szynal, priest of the Diocese of Koszalin-Kolobrzeg in Poland, pursuing incardination here with the permission of his bishop. Administrator for Immaculate Conception Parish in Polson and for Sacred Heart Parish in Ronan, with St. Joseph Mission in Charlo, for a three-year term.

Sister Patricia Toeckes, SCL Sister Patricia Toeckes, SCL – Pastoral Administrator for Our Lady of the Pines Parish in West Yellowstone with St. Joseph Mission in Big Sky, for another threeyear term.

Father Bart Tolleson Father Bart Tolleson – Pastor of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Parish in East Helena with St. John Mission in Clancy, for a six-year term. Previously, Father Tolleson was the pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Frenchtown, with St. Albert the Great Mission in Alberton and St. Mary Queen of Heaven Mission in Superior.

Father Christopher Weekly, SJ Father Christopher Weekly, SJ – Parochial Vicar, St. Francis Xavier Parish in Missoula, effective June 1. Father Weekly also will serve as the superior for the Jesuits assigned in Montana.
