Jacob Nistler grew up in Helena, where his family attends the Cathedral of St.
Helena. The second oldest of nine children, he said his strongly Catholic family
was a place where having priests as dinner guests was a common and natural occurrence.
Jacob’s growth in the faith and discernment of a possible call to the priesthood was a gradual and life-long process. As the possibility of such a call became more real, his parents, grandparents and other family members were tremendously supportive. The only opposition to the idea came from some of his female friends.
Jake acquired a strong work ethic from his earliest years. He has worked in construction, landscaping, building maintenance and as a cook. This summer he is head cook at Legendary Lodge, after having served as the assistant cook last year. He has also cooked at the Waterford in Helena, a retired living center directed by his dad.
Jake believes strongly in the life-changing power of prayer. “I started praying the rosary in seventh or eighth grade,” said Jake, “and my whole life seemed to take a step forward.” His advice: “Pray first and foremost,” he said. “Pray that you will have the faith to trust in the providence of God.”
